Camping:
The Black Hills National Forest has more than 30 campgrounds with nearly 700 individual sites. A majority of the campgrounds are operated by Forest Recreation Management, Inc. and about half have on-site hosts. Electric, sewer and water hook-up and shower availability range from campground to campground but at a minimum, most campgrounds have potable water and either flush or vault toilets. Daily fees range from $5 to $21 a night per site allowing up to six people are charged from mid-May through October. Reservations are not required but are recommended in high traffic periods and may be made through ReserveUSA at 1-877-444-6777 or online.

Dispersed Camping:
Camping away from developed areas is available in most of the Black Hills National Forest as well. Time restricts dispersed camping to 14 days in any 60 day period and is restricted around developed reservoirs and campgrounds where camping is only allowed in designated areas. The main detractor for many campers is that campfires are prohibited in South Dakota areas of the forest.
